Day Seven - Sailing

The evening of day six ended with Tony and I in the neighborhood of our hotel having a cup of coffee, a little free wifi and a quiet goodbye to the city as this is our last night in Athens.

We did find some wonderful coffee in Greece not at Starbucks! Imagine that!

We started out day seven by saying goodbye to the Divani Caravel, boarding the buses and heading to Piraeus, Greece the main port in Athens where we would meet our ship, the Aquamarine. Of course, in Greece, should you blink you'll risk missing an ancient historical site. Never one to miss an opportunity, even in a moving bus...

Hadrian's gate was built by the Athenian’s in honor of Hadrian, and served as the entrance to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which had been completed by the Emperor Hadrian (117 -132 AD). The Corinthian gate was the border of the old city of Athens and the new city that Hadrian built. And although Hadrian was Roman, he was a true phil-hellene who’s “subtleness” is a trait amongst today’s Modern Greeks. Peering up at the east side of the arch as you face the Acropolis you’ll find his not so subtle message: “This side is Hadrian’s city, not Theseus’” and on the west side, with the inscription “This is Athens, the former city of Theseus”.

Moving through customs we came across this poster done by their Ministry of Tourism.

Our ship! There was a line because they had to take all of our pictures (souvenir) before boarding. Needless to say we did not purchase ours!

And what have we learned here...never let the person behind you carry the camera or you will end up with a picture of your behind! :-o

Our first look at our room for the next three nights! The Aquamarine is an older ship but we were very comfortable, the food was great and we were rarely on it!

Did I say we were very comfortable?! OK, I might have stretched the truth a little when it comes to the tiny, little area to the right of the toilet. If you watched the Chilean miners rescued, you might have noticed the rescue capsule that they were brought to the surface of the earth in. That was the size of our shower. There are many shower stories from many in our group but those stories will stay on the Aquamarine!!

I think enough has been said about the "water closet"!

We were not the only ship pulling out of port!

Out to sea and on to Mykonos our first stop!

Everyone has heard of the "Soup Nazi" but did you know there was a "Lifeboat Nazi"? There she is and I could have gotten a better picture but would have risked being put off the ship! Ha!

Tony and I have fun no matter what or who! Silly "Lifeboat Nazi"!

Yeah, I never learn - another long arm shot! I'm happy because Kay is on my lifeboat!

We did take instruction seriously!

The sign says it all!

Before we walked to the town, we wanted to take this picture with the town in the background.
We had no idea that taxis could travel down this narrow street until we found ourselves jumping into a doorway to keep from getting hit!

It was not long after we arrived on the island that the sun began to set. This picture was sent to me by one of our friends that we had met on the tour. I want to share their words regarding this beautiful picture...

"Carla and I were looking at this picture, she noticed that the reflection in the water is shaped like a cross. We then noticed that the sun’s reflection was brightest at the center of the cross. Is it then too much of an extrapolation to say that the picture’s 'light from heaven' shines brightest through the “center (heart) of the cross”? Regardless, it’s certainly a true statement."

Did I mention we had a good time?!

A few island shots of our own...

Tonight we decided to have dinner on our own in a cute little restaurant called Katerina's in Little Venice. Since a picture is worth 1,000 words, below you will see why the area is called Little Venice.
Little Venice on Mykonos Island.

The restaurant was sitting out over the water and Tony and I were seated at an open window and could look out over the Aegean sea and the island's historic windmills.

Our meal started with one of their specialties which was Baked Feta with Pita Bread. Our meal was delicious as well! We both had seafood and apparently we were more interested in eating it than taking pictures of it!

After an evening of shopping and dining even a bed this small looked awfully inviting! And, no, I have not come back to Houston making towel animals for Tony!

"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7
